Tropical Storm Earl is dumping torrential rain on Mexico.
At 5 a.m., the center of the former hurricane was about 70 miles west-southwest of Ciudad del Carmen. It was moving to the west-northwest at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Earl is expected to produce up to 12 inches of rain over portions of the Mexican states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tabasco and Veracruz through Saturday morning with possible isolated maximum amounts of 18 inches. These rains could result in life-threatening flash floods and mudslides
