Heat wave delays fall colors

United States

Peak season for the changing fall colors is right around the corner.
Typically, across Upper Michigan, that time falls during the first and second weeks of October.

So now that fall is officially here it's time to get out and enjoy the beauty of the season. It's been a different start to fall this year with the record breaking highs last weekend.

In fact, as of late August, the leaves were running slightly ahead of schedule with several early season frosts across the interior western U.P.

But the recent heat wave, including four consecutive record highs last week, has extended summer's last days and kept the leaves from turning colors, especially near the warmer waters of the great lakes.

While this weekend isn't starting out so promising, weather conditions will improve by Saturday.

After a frosty night ahead Friday night, the leaves will become even more vibrant into next week. As of now, the best spots to catch some fall colors are in the western UP, specifically Iron County, where the leaves have reached their peak colors.
