Irma rapidly intensified into a major hurricane (Category 3 or stronger) in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, but has temporarily halted its intensification trend.
For now, Irma presents no immediate threat to any land areas, but that is increasingly likely to change by next week.
